1In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet unto Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, saying,
1In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua, the son of Jehozadak, the high priest:
2Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, This people say, The time is not come, the time that the LORD’s house should be built.
2"This is what the LORD of hosts says: These people are saying, 'The time hasn't come yet, the time to rebuild the LORD's house.'"
3Then came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying,
3Then the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet:
4Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your cieled houses, and this house lie waste?
4"Is this really the time for you to be living in houses with fine paneled walls, while this house sits in ruins?"
5Now therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.
5"Now this is what the LORD of hosts says: Take a hard look at your ways.
6Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes.
6You have sown plenty of seed and brought in only a small crop. You eat, but you are still hungry; you drink, but your thirst isn't satisfied; you dress, but nobody gets warm; and the one who earns a wage drops it into a bag with holes in it."
7Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.
7"This is what the LORD of hosts says: Take a hard look at your ways.
8Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the LORD.
8Climb the mountain, haul down wood, and build the house. I will be glad of it, and I will receive glory," says the LORD.
9Ye looked for much, and lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? saith the LORD of hosts. Because of mine house that is waste, and ye run every man unto his own house.
9"You were counting on a lot, and look, it turned out to be hardly anything; and what you did bring home, I blew away. Why?" says the LORD of hosts. "Because of my house, which lies in ruins, while every one of you runs off to his own house.
10Therefore the heaven over you is stayed from dew, and the earth is stayed from her fruit.
10That is why the sky above you has held back its dew and the earth has held back its crops.
11And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the corn, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labour of the hands.
11And I summoned a drought over the land and over the hills, over the grain, the fresh wine, and the oil, over everything the soil brings up, over people and animals, and over every job done by human hands."
12Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him, and the people did fear before the LORD.
12Then Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua, the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, together with all the rest of the people, listened to the voice of the LORD their God and to the words of Haggai the prophet, because the LORD their God had sent him. And the people showed reverence before the LORD.
13Then spake Haggai the LORD’s messenger in the LORD’s message unto the people, saying, I am with you, saith the LORD.
13Then Haggai, the LORD's messenger, delivered the LORD's message to the people: "I am with you," says the LORD.
14And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work in the house of the LORD of hosts, their God,

1On the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai:
2Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and to the residue of the people, saying,
2"Speak now to Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, to Joshua, the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the rest of the people. Say to them,
3Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing?
3'Is anyone still here among you who saw this house in its first splendor? And what do you see when you look at it now? Compared with that, doesn't it look to you like nothing at all?
4Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the LORD; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the LORD, and work: for I am with you, saith the LORD of hosts:
4But now be strong, Zerubbabel,' says the LORD. 'Be strong, Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land,' says the LORD, 'and get to work, for I am with you,' says the LORD of hosts.
5According to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so my spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not.
5'This is the promise I made to you when you came out of Egypt, and my Spirit is still living among you. Do not be afraid.'
6For thus saith the LORD of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land;
6"For this is what the LORD of hosts says: Just one more time, and soon, I will make the sky and the ground tremble, and the sea and the dry land too.
7And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts.
7I will make every nation tremble, and the treasure all nations long for will come, and I will flood this house with glory," says the LORD of hosts.
8The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts.
8"The silver is mine to give, and so is the gold," says the LORD of hosts.
9The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts.
9"This later house will have more glory than the first one ever had," says the LORD of hosts, "and here, in this place, I will give peace," says the LORD of hosts.
10In the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying,
10On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet:
11Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Ask now the priests concerning the law, saying,
11"This is what the LORD of hosts says: Ask the priests what the law says about this:
12If one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat, shall it be holy? And the priests answered and said, No.
12Suppose a man is carrying meat set apart as holy in the fold of his robe, and that fold touches bread, or stew, or wine, or oil, or any other food. Does the food become holy?" The priests answered, "No."
13Then said Haggai, If one that is unclean by a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean? And the priests answered and said, It shall be unclean.
13Then Haggai asked, "If someone who is unclean from touching a dead body touches any of these things, does it become unclean?" The priests answered, "Yes, it becomes unclean."
14Then answered Haggai, and said, So is this people, and so is this nation before me, saith the LORD; and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean.
14Then Haggai answered, "That is what this people is like, and what this nation is like, as I see them," says the LORD, "and that is what every work of their hands is like: whatever they bring as an offering there is unclean.
15And now, I pray you, consider from this day and upward, from before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of the LORD:
15Now, I ask you, think carefully from this day forward, and remember the time before a single stone was set on another in the LORD's temple.
16Since those days were, when one came to an heap of twenty measures, there were but ten: when one came to the pressfat for to draw out fifty vessels out of the press, there were but twenty.
16In those days, a person would come to a pile of grain looking for twenty measures and find just ten; he would go to the winepress to dip out fifty jars and get just twenty.
17I smote you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the labours of your hands; yet ye turned not to me, saith the LORD.
17I hit every crop you worked for with scorching wind, mildew and hail, and even then you didn't turn back to me," says the LORD.
18Consider now from this day and upward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, even from the day that the foundation of the LORD’s temple was laid, consider it.
18"Think carefully from this day forward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, the day the foundation of the LORD's temple was laid. Think about it:
19Is the seed yet in the barn? yea, as yet the vine, and the fig tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive tree, hath not brought forth: from this day will I bless you.
19Is the seed still sitting in the barn? So far the grapevine, the fig, the pomegranate and the olive have given you nothing. But starting today, I am going to bless you."
20And again the word of the LORD came unto Haggai in the four and twentieth day of the month, saying,
20The word of the LORD came to Haggai a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month:
21Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I will shake the heavens and the earth;
21"Tell Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, that I am going to shake the heavens and the earth.
22And I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms, and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the heathen; and I will overthrow the chariots, and those that ride in them; and the horses and their riders shall come down, every one by the sword of his brother.
22I will topple the thrones of kingdoms and break the strength of the nations' kingdoms. I will tip over the chariots and the men who ride in them; the horses and their riders will go down, each man cut down by his own brother's sword.
23In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, will I take thee, O Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel, saith the LORD, and will make thee as a signet: for I have chosen thee, saith the LORD of hosts.
23When that day comes," says the LORD of hosts, "I will take you, Zerubbabel my servant, son of Shealtiel," says the LORD, "and I will wear you like a signet ring on my hand, because you are the one I have chosen," says the LORD of hosts.
